Where does awareness ‘go’ when it lapses out of itself and loses itself in identification?
First and foremost it falls into the stream of what the fourth way calls ‘imagination’, which can take several forms. Most frequent is the endless chain of thoughts and dreaming which occupy our mind throughout the day (and night). We call it thinking about the day ahead, envisioning who we will meet and what we will say, trying to pin down an idea, vaguely planning a project, fantasizing about ourselves as the hero or villain or victim in a situation, anticipating good and bad times, entertaining sentimentality or melancholy, dredging up past events. Literally any topic outside what is happening right here, right now becomes the subject of imagination. It is the result of awareness, having become identified with a topic, settling into it the way that water sprayed out of a hose starts to settle in pools on the ground.
